Why Locals Love Gold Bao

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Cooper Square, Gold Bao offers an enticing self-service dining experience that seamlessly merges authenticity with modern convenience. Specializing in Asian-inspired comfort food, this spot is a gem for anyone craving expertly crafted bao buns and flavorful pan-fried noodles.

Highlights from their menu are an absolute delight to the senses. The Seafood Pan-Fried Noodles ($12.95) come perfectly charred with a tantalizing mix of fresh seafood, creating a harmonious balance of textures—slightly crispy yet tender—infused with savory, umami-rich notes. Meanwhile, the Wagyu With Black Truffle Bao (4 pcs for $8.95) elevates the humble bao to luxurious heights, marrying melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef with the earthiness of black truffle for an indulgent bite you won’t forget.

For those who prefer a sampling, the Mini Pan-Fried Bao Combo offers thoughtful variety: the rich Pork With Black Truffle ($15.95) and the aromatic Chicken With Mushroom ($19.95) pair perfectly, showcasing the kitchen’s attention to flavor and texture. Lighter options like the Fried Spring Rolls—including Peking Duck Rolls ($4.95) that surprise with their tender, succulent filling—add a crisp contrast to the softer steamed buns. These refined yet approachable offerings make Gold Bao a standout for casual yet refined dining.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere here exudes a relaxed and welcoming vibe. Diners have praised the “chill” ambiance alongside warm, inviting service, making it a perfect spot for an easy lunch or a casual dinner with friends. The interior is clean and thoughtfully arranged, and even the bathrooms maintain a high standard of cleanliness—a detail that enhances the overall experience.

Customers' voices paint an honest, vibrant portrait of Gold Bao. From the addictive crunch of their popcorn chicken to the juicy, crispy Kung Pao Chicken Bao that left a lasting impression, it’s clear that the kitchen strives to achieve flavorful authenticity. While some dishes like the pork soup dumpling might not have fully hit the mark for all, the majority rave about the freshness, seasoning, and satisfying portions. One returning visitor expressed heartfelt appreciation for the staff's kindness and the restaurant’s reasonable pricing in a city known for its culinary competition.

Whether you're a bao aficionado or a newcomer to pan-Asian cuisine, Gold Bao offers a refreshing blend of quality ingredients, creative flare, and homely charm. It beckons the neighborhood—and beyond—to savor comforting dishes that are both adventurous and deeply satisfying.

First of all, the place looks nice and has a clean bathroom. While the portion on the popcorn chicken is small. It's what I think of when I think of popcorn chicken. It was crunchy and chewy. I liked it. The pork soup dumpling was okay. While it hits all the notes of one, it was quite lacking.

My husband ordered pork as well as pork and shrimp bao. I order the kimchi, mapo tofu bao and the duck rolls. I don't usually like duck but I would definitely order them again from here. The mapo tofu was really good and wasn't too saucy but was flavored very well. My husband enjoy his bao. I usually enjoy kimchi but it was the only thing in my order that I didn't like and that is just up to preference. I will order again because the food didn't need sauces, flavors were created and worth the money spent.

I was sad when the alley closed but I’m not anymore. The buns were good and the staff were so nice! Reasonable price for the city. I’ll come back ^_^

Nice atmosphere and great bao, very crispy bao!! Strong truffle flavor if you get that one! . Recommend eat dipped in soy sauce! :) There a small bit of sitting room in the back too, altho the packaging is perfect for walking around and eating!! I ordered all the juices to try. I would not recommend the sea buckthorn berry flavor to first timers unless it is a flavor you know you like, which is kinda citrusy but with a Chinese dried fruit taste to it (if you know you know). The hawthorn juice was very good and I think most people would like it! White gourd is also a safe option it kinda tastes like a sweet tea but less sugary!

Service was good. Location and atmosphere was clean and neat. I tried a few baos and highly recommend 'berkshire pork' and 'wagyu'. I also recommend the peking duck.
